I’ve sent few parcels to India. Some of them were delivered without any issues but I’m seeing lately that they have started stealing from parcels. As reported by my relatives in India these parcels were torn and some valuable (useful) items were stolen.

I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this issue or it is only me?

You are not alone. Few years back I used to send a lot of items such as books, gifts, toys etc. Initially they were delivered safely. After few times they started stealing from it by tearing parcel and taking out items from the inside of the parcel. It happened many times. I eventually stopped sending anything.

Since we are NRIs and living away from India there is no way we can complain or claim damage loss. It is pathetic. Indian postal system is totally fucked up now a days.

If you use Royal Mail/Post Office/Parcel Force from the UK then they normally hand it to fucked up Indian post in India. So don’t use any if these services. Other services are fucking too expensive so you may not use them either. It is just fucking so frustrating to know that in this fucked up country of ours even a basic taken for granted postal system stopped working.

There was few occasions when Postal workers called my family to come to pick up parcels from the post office instead of delivering them to my family home.

Fuck Indian post, this is another corrupt British shit left in India which has become corrupt like rest of others.

I recently sent some important document to my parents in India. Upon arrival they received a torn envelope with all documents missing. It was clearly visible that they have cut it to remove the documents from the envelope. I felt sick to my stomach. Not sure who and where they steal it?

We are also partly to blame for the items being stolen by Indian post. Some of rich NRIs try to send valuable items in the post. Indian postal workers/postmen/babus have evolve to discover that these dumb rich NRIs send valuable items so they started to take advantage. They started sniffing and if get lucky found valuable items which they started to steal. Soon this spread like wildfire and every asshole working in Indian postal system started doing it. It is easy money, no one will find out and if someone complains they will blame to other post office/sorting houses. There will be no proof, no one will be caught and the theft will continue.

No one cares about it either.

I see that some of you said that parcels were delivered without being stolen initially, which confirms my theory. One off is let go but once you started sending more they will know that valuable items are being sent and they start stealing it.

I also think that they tera at at customs and keep it instead of Indian Post stealing it. It is hard to tell who is the thief, Indian customs or Indian Post.

There is one more reason why your valuable items are missing from the parcel. It may be that these items are not allowed in India, or that Indian Customs have to take it out to inspect and then either keep it or bin it.

I remember sending few medicine to my mother which were delivered once but were stolen by Indian Post later. Not sure what would they get from stealing medicine? May be customs removed it? By looking at the tear on envelope I can say that it was stolen rather than inspected by Indian customs.

@dhiren I don’t agree with your theory on Indian Customs. If customs find any suspicious or valuable or prohibited item then they would initiate process to inform/collect duty/tax or whatever they do.

I’m pretty sure that Indian postal system is stealing it. Who steals is the actual mystery.

You are not using Indian Post to send items, you use your country of residence’s postal/courier system to send parcel from abroad so technically you can’t claim anything from Indian post. Most of these foreign couriers will allow you to claim. UK Post Office uses DPD & Evri to send parcel. They offer compensation you can read more about it here https://parcelsonline.postoffice.co.uk/

I’m not sure who they handover parcel to in India, if it is Indian post then you are fucked.

I’m going to send books to India using post office, I’ll keep you updated with the progress. This is to test how Indian Post performs in 2024 and under almost ousted Modi government.

I sent some cosmetic items to my mom via normal post. They were not at home when parcel was delivered. When they came home and checked the parcel, it was empty inside and was torn. Items were stolen. Shame on Indian Post.
